Saturday was Nick's 4th time trial. He skated a 500m and for the first time, a 1,000m. He made it look easy! Very smooth and fluid. He was congratulated by many. His 500 start was the best I've seen yet. He had quick feet and one of his fastest 100m openers at 11.0. He ended up finishing in second place, setting another PB.
100m opener - 11.00
500m lap time - 27.40
500m finish - 38.40
His first 1,000 went better than expected. He finished second in this distance as well. While skating the straightaways he showed pure power. Lots of pressure in the ice, great pushes and very smooth. He has been working on sitting lower and it's paying off.
200m opener - 18.41
600m lap time - 27.75
1,000m lap time - 28.67
1,000m total - 1:14.83
There is another time trail scheduled for this weekend, he will skate one race and has to decide between the 3,000m and 1,500m.
It was just fun. I was sitting center ice in front of the score board so I could see Nick skate and then write down his times. Liller came over and was doing the same thing for her husband, John. It's fun to see Liller and John. They are here for just about every time trial and drive from southern California (at least a 10 hour drive) so John can skate and then they go back perhaps after spending a night or two. Every time I've talked to them they have just arrived and drove straight to the rink, or they are leaving right from the rink to go home. Last month when they were here for the short track world cup, Liller said they rented a sports car so they could go fast. On Saturday there was a winter storm and they were heading home after the races. Nick wished them luck and John put his first finger and thumb together with each hand like he was pinching something and said while laughing, "I've been practicing putting chains on."
